The wrong-network mistake that destroys funds

Who this is for: you're about to send crypto somewhere — an exchange, a wallet, a friend — and you've heard that picking the wrong "network" can lose the money forever. You're right to be careful. This guide explains what a network actually is, the exact ways people get it wrong, and how to check before you press send.

Crypto sent on the wrong network has no bank, no branch, and no manager to call. In most cases it simply cannot be recovered by anyone — not the exchange, not the wallet maker, not PlainCrypto. That's not a scare tactic, it's just how the technology works.

What "network" actually means

Think of a coin's ticker (like ETH, USDT, or SUI) as a brand name, and the network as the road it travels on. Some coins only ever use one road. Others — usually stablecoins and popular tokens — have been built to travel on several different roads at once, and each road has its own separate address format and separate "post office."

The danger: an address that's perfectly valid on one road can look totally normal and still be the wrong destination on another road. There's no warning light. The transaction goes through, looks successful, and the coins land nowhere you can reach — or nowhere at all.

A token exists as both an ERC-20 (Ethereum-style) version and its own native mainnet coin Sending the ERC-20 version to a native-mainnet-only address (or vice versa) is one of the most common ways people lose funds. Always confirm which version your destination wallet actually holds.
A coin migrated from an older network (e.g. Cosmos-style) to a newer EVM (Ethereum-style) network Old and new addresses can look similar but belong to completely different chains. An old-format address is not automatically compatible with the new network, and mixing them up loses funds.
A wallet that supports a coin's ticker but not every network it runs on Just because your wallet shows "SUI" or "APT" as a coin name elsewhere doesn't mean this specific wallet can receive it — some major hardware wallets simply don't support certain coins at all.
Stablecoins on multiple chains (USDT, USDC, etc.) The same stablecoin can exist on half a dozen different networks. Sending USDT on the wrong one to an exchange deposit address is a routine way people lose money — always match the network the receiving side explicitly names.
